A Hanging Sun

Hello and Welcome!

Psalm 148:3
 Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all stars of light!

I hope you enjoy this little project of making a hanging sun.
It is pretty easy and doesn't require a ton of time.

When I set out to make a visual aid I try to use resources I already have on hand. I don't necessarily seek out something to make that costs, but with this visual aid, it seemed like an easy fix that was not too expensive and you may already have the tools needed.

Supplies:
One hula hoop medium-sized, any color.
·       Yellow bulletin board paper to completely cover one side of hula hoop, a few inches wider than hoop for folding.
·       7 regular sized pieces of yellow construction paper or card stock. (you will need more if you have a larger hoop)
·       Scissors
·       Scotch tape
·       Heavy string (#10 crochet thread or kite string works well.)
·       One large paper clip only if you have suspended ceilings with lift up tile and metal strip. One tack to mount to a regular ceiling.

Instructions:
1.     Lay hula hoop on top of paper with curl of paper going toward hula hoop.

It will make it easier to fold around hoop. Cut paper leaving a couple inches extra all around the hoop.

2.     Cut slits in paper outside of hoop and tape each piece around the hoop. (Showing back of sun)

3.    Take each piece of your yellow construction paper/card stock, and fold it in half longways pinching the ends to make a center point without creasing all the way down.

 4. Make cutting lines for large sun rays by folding top of paper from center point to bottom corners on right and left sides of paper. You will end up with shape of a large triangle to cut for large sun rays.

  5.  Cut 7 large sun rays setting aside smaller triangles to cut smaller sun rays from.
(You may need more if you have a larger hoop.)
6. Take leftover pieces of construction paper and fold each from the bottom left corner to make two of the smaller triangles. Cut.

      7.  Alternate large and small sun rays completely around the back of the covered hoop to connect. Tape each sun rays to the back of the hoop.

1      8.  Poke a small hole in the sun close to top of the hoop.
Insert the string through hole and knot to make a loop for hanging.

           9. Hang from the ceiling.

(If you have suspended ceilings with medal strips, see instructions
for how to hang visual aids from suspended ceilings with a paper clip here.)
