Joseph - His Coat and Dreams!

Hello and Welcome!

Today I am sharing the first of 5 lessons about Joseph!

Love/Jealousy

Our lesson is found in the Bible book of Genesis! (Show book, chapter, and verse.)
Genesis is the first book in the Bible. It took place during the Patriarchal age when God talked to the father's of the family.

How many of you have Grandparents?
Have you ever heard of a Bible man named Abraham? He had a son named Isaac, a grandson named Jacob, and Jacob had 12 sons and one was named Joseph.
We will be learning more about Joseph in our lesson today.

Jacob's family was very large. In many ways they were just like families of today,
They worked, played, ate, slept, and they didn't always get along.
Jacob was a very blessed father, he not only had 12 sons but also 1 daughter named Dinah.
Jacob's children were the great grandchildren of Abraham.
Let's begin learning about Jacob and his 12 sons.

- The Mothers -
Jacob had 2 wives and his wives had 2 maids or servants.
Children by Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, (and Dinah - Genesis 30:19-21).
Children by Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
Children by Bilhah Rachel's servant: Dan and Naphtali
Children by Zilpah Leah's servant: Gad and Asher.
12 sons by 4 different mothers!
Genesis 35:23-26

Jacob loved Rachel the mother Joseph very much!
Genesis 29:18
(Rachel died after she had her son Benjamin who was Joseph's brother.)
Genesis 35:16-20

This family lived in the land of Canaan.
Genesis 37:1

Today, this land is also known as the Holy Land.
People from the United States have actually gone to visit this land.

Joseph was 17 years old and was in the pasture feeding the sheep with 4 of his brothers, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher, (the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah).

Joseph ran home and brought back a bad report about them to their father, Jacob.
(They must have been doing something that wasn't good or right for Joseph to tell on them,)

(The scripture does not say when Joseph was given his coat just that he had been given a coat from Jacob, so Joseph very well could have been in possession of his new coat before he had been in the pasture with his 4 brothers.)

Now Jacob/Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age. Jacob had made Joseph a many colored/highly decorated tunic/coat. *
(Show a multi colored/fancy robe.)
When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; they hated him and could not speak to him on friendly terms.

Joseph's brothers were not happy and were jealous of him because
their father gave him a very special coat.
(Other words for jealous - resentful, spiteful, or envious.)

How many of you have ever had a dream?
Joseph had a dream and he wanted his brothers to hear about it.
He said, "Please listen to this dream I had."
"We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.

The brothers hated him and said, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?"

And they hated him all the more because of his dream and his words.

Then Joseph had another dream.
He said,
"This time the sun, moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me."

This dream made his brothers even more jealous of him!

Joseph also shared the dream with his father and he scolded Joseph and said,
"What is this dream you had?
Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?"

So Joseph's brothers were very jealous of Joseph and hated him,
but his father Jacob thought about what Joseph had said and what it might mean,
keeping the matter in mind.

Instead of being jealous and hating Joseph because he was honored and they were not, Joseph’s brothers should have been happy for Joseph, showing him love and acceptance.
It was not Joseph's fault he had been favored over his brothers, nor did he have anything to do with having the dreams, but his brothers still did not love him because of these things.

If Joseph’s brothers would have loved him,
what are some ways they could have shown that love?
They could have rejoiced with him!

The Bible says:
Romans 12:15 - Rejoice with them that do rejoice and weep with them that weep.

Philippians 4:8 - Finally brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute/reputation, if there is any excellence and if anything is worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

Matthew 7:12a - In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you.

1 Corinthians 13:4 - (This chapter defines love and condemns being jealous.)

1 John 3:11 - For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

I’d  like to believe that Jacob saw his son Joseph's good character and that is why Joseph was favored, but the Bible tells us he was favored because he was the son of Jacob old age.

As far as Joseph’s character goes, he was an honest young man!

As families let us try to love one another.

Divide and Conquer!!

Hello and Welcome!

Memorizing Bible Verses!

I am sure many of you as Bible teachers have witnessed children saying their Bible verse from memory. They met the challenge and nailed it! How proud they feel!

Learning Bible verses can be a challenge. But what a rewarding to feeling to challenge our brain and actually learn a Bible verse! One we can actually put to use in our daily lives, especially when we are needing to combat that old Devil.

I remember when Jesus was tempted. He used scripture to fight the enemy.
We should do the same.

Ephesians 6: 10-17 speaks of taking up the full armor of God, that includes the shield of faith with which we are able to extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one. This armor also includes the Word of God which the sword of the spirit.

How can we learn to wield our sword unless we learn/torture the scriptures!

Here is an idea that may aid you in helping anyone do just that.

I call this Divide and Conquer!
These are little take-home memory cards!

Put the scripture reference on the first card with 2 or 3 beginning words of the Bible verse. Then split  up the words of the rest of the verse on other cards.

( I typed mine out and glued them onto folded colored cardstock. You may want to put numbers on the back of the cards so you can see the order easily as the cards face the students.)
Shuffle the cards and see if your students can put them in the correct order. Once the verse is in the correct order say the Bible verse together and taking out a card and saying the Bible verse again until all the cards are gone and see who can recite their Bible verse.

What is really fun is when the students get to test their teacher to see if they know the verse as well!

(Ha, my students lined the sheep up to read
from right to left instead of left to right.)

Fun Bible "People"

Hello and Welcome!

How many of you are coffee drinkers out there?

Personally, I am not a coffee drinker, but I knew someone who was and she also loved flavored cream! She was a well-loved lady, a sister in Christ, and a children's Bible class teacher. She was very talented and knew the value of a good visual aid to draw her student's focus to the Bible lesson at hand.

What do Bible people have to do with coffee or creamer?

When it comes to portraying Bible people, there are so many great ides available to us on the world wide web, and I could not wait to share one more!

I am sure your Bible class students would love seeing and toughing these little people.

One thing that makes them unique is that each of them are made from creamer bottles! The lid and shape of the bottle makes the perfect mold!

Save those creamer bottles from going in the trash and try your hand at making these delightful little Bible people to help keep your students focused.

A New Year, Anonther Opportunity!

Hello and Welcome!

A New Year!

"And so this is Christmas,
and what have you done,
another year over, and a new one just begun...

I've always liked Happy Christmas (War is Over)
by John Lennon/Yoko Ono.

So what are we going to do with this new year?
Have you made plans already?

I've actually been waiting for this month to arrive for I do have plans!

Plans to begin organizing a Vacation Bible School Workshop for the teachers of next year's 5 day VBS! It is our intention for us to get a head start with lesson ideas, lesson/classroom visual aids, songs, games, etc.

The theme and titles have already been picked and I am so excited to get started!

Our Theme:
"Livin' the Dream" - Joseph - Genesis 37-50

Genesis 37:1-11 Joseph's character - Honest

Genesis 42:1-44:34, Joseph's character - Cautious
Day 5
" More Than a Dream" - Joseph Forgives his Brothers - Forgiveness -  Genesis 45-47; 50:15-21,
Joseph's character - Forgiving

Vacation Bible School has been around for generations and I found Wikipedia's information on the history of VBS to be somewhat interesting. As with any program, VBS has seemed to evolve but has thankfully kept the relevant term of Bible, to help children learn about God and His truth!

As a child, my experience of attending VBS was very exciting!

Our congregation had a very active bus program where families of the town were invited to ride the bus to attend our VBS and learn about God and His love. (I actually got to ride the bus and witness all the excitement of those coming to Vacation Bible School because my Daddy was one of the drivers.)

When we arrived, we began in the auditorium with an introduction to the theme of our week together and that day's particular Bible lesson and went on to sing, sing, and sing! There weren't any decorations upfront but we were all happy and excited to see what the evening held for us.

Lots of teachers /helpers!
Lots of kids!

Class began and we were always made aware that our lesson came straight from the Bible!
Class activities were always fun and everyone looked forward to snack time outside where we had a little free time to play.
Upon returning to the auditorium, it was always exciting to see who the "banner class" would be by having the most students in attendance!
We sang some more and then it was time to find out who had brought visitors that day.

I remember the "brought 1 buttons" that were passed out to each person who had brought a visitor! One child by the end of the week had his shirt covered in these particular pins and was so very proud!!

It all began on Sunday evening and ended on Saturday with a picnic in the park where we played relay races and most importantly, awards were given out for perfect attendance and such and those who had brought the most visitors actually received a Bible!

Those were fun years of VBS in my childhood.
Those memories have actually made me be excited to be involved as an adult!

Thank you to all those who tirelessly worked those long VBS days!

I have been involved in the teaching and planning end of things and have participated in a 5 day, 3day, and even a 1 day VBS. My favorite is a 5 day so I can learn the names of my students and interact with them longer so the teachings of God may touch their young hearts and help them see the church is made up of people who care for each of them and their parents.

VBS is a wonderful opportunity to not just have a "fun time" for the kids, but to reach out to the families of your community. I have seen and been involved with VBS where it is organized with Bible classes for children only and then also where there are adult Bible classes offered so the parents can have an opportunity to learn along with their children and we have opportunity to get to know the parents who may be a good prospect for a home Bible study! But no matter if there are adult classes or not, a VBS program should be designed to reach out to the entire family to bring them to Christ!

That is where follow up comes in.
Remember all those kids who attended VBS?

Each parent/guardian most likely filled out some kind of registration form
before dropping their child off.
There you have it!
The information needed to reach out to each of those families!
I wonder how many of these parents remember having a fun time attending Vacation Bible School?
It is no wonder why they are sending their children!

A new year, another opportunity!

Books of the Bible Cards!

Hello and Welcome!

Leaning Books of the Bible!

Helping my students learn and recite
the books of the Bible makes me smile!

We say them aloud together aloud, and then I ask, "Who wants to say them on their own?"  Normally 2 or 3 want to show what they have learned!

These little Books of the Bible cards are something I have used in Bible class for several years as an "early bird" activity. I like how they can also be used as a team game for those who can read. No matter how many times I use these little cards it is a challenge for each new class.

For myself, I have made the New and Old Testaments different colors.

Each card has a book of the Bible on it and a number on the back so once they feel like they have all the books in the correct order, they turn each card over to check and see if all the numbers are in the correct order and if they are not they turn the card back over to see which ones they got wrong.

Each student also gets a whole set of cards to take home to practice!

I also like for my students to write the books of the Bible! They are given a paper with the first letter of each book of the Bible in order. I don't care if the spelling is correct, I just want them to try. This is also great to do before class actually begins and may also take up about 5 minutes of actual class time.

Bookmarks are also good for them to have a ready list of the books to familiarize themselves with reading and saying them in order.

Find the printable Books of the Bible cards, papers to write out each book of the Bible with the first letter given, and Books of the Bible bookmark by clicking on the gold star below!

I hope you find these cards good for Bible class or home use!
